About
Home Assistant projects from one household in Finland, written up so you can reuse them.
Automate the North collects the Home Assistant projects that keep one Finnish household running. Everything published here is in daily use: the block heaters that warm two cars on winter mornings, the ventilation that reacts to smoke outside, the district heating controller, and the dashboards that tie it together.
The Home Assistant documentation explains each building block well. What's harder to find is how the blocks fit together in a real house, with all the edge cases a cold climate brings. That's what these pages try to show, with the full configuration included.
The setup
- Home Assistant OS on a Raspberry Pi 5
- Zigbee through a network coordinator and Zigbee2MQTT
- Matter smart plugs for the car heaters
- ESPHome devices for sensors built at home
- A Vallox ventilation unit over the local network
- An Ouman district heating controller read over Modbus
- Nord Pool spot prices for electricity
How the projects are written
- Tested in use. A project is published once it has run in the house, and its page is updated when something changes.
- Neutral names. Entity names, places and people are replaced with generic ones, so you can paste the configuration and swap in your own entities.
- Built-in first. Home Assistant's own cards and helpers are used wherever they do the job.
- Two languages. Every page is available in English and Finnish.
